Number Portability

Lets subscribers of publicly available telephone services (including mobile services) change their service provider, while keeping their existing telephone number. Provides a regulated facility that fosters consumer choice and effective competition, by letting subscribers switch providers without the costs and inconvenience of changing telephone numbers — consumers can change service providers and still keep the same phone number, from one wireless carrier to another, or from a wireline phone to a wireless phone.

Key features include:

  • geographic number portability (fixed telephone numbers, including those with geographic significance such as with area codes)
  • non-geographic number portability (specially tariffed services such as freephone, local-rate, national-rate, and premium-rate services)
  • mobile number portability (mobile telephone numbers)
  • directory-enquiry access-code transfer (directory-enquiry access codes)
  • personal number portability (personal numbers).
